Once upon a time there lived an old priest who was dearly loved by his parishioners. One day the priest took a journey to a far country. He took a small private plane with three passengers on board including himself: the others were, a rich businessman and a boy scout. As soon as the plane took off, the engine sputtered and stopped altogether.

They all rushed to get their parachutes. They were horrified to realize that there were not enough parachutes for all of them. One of them will be left without one. The pilot took one, saying, “I have a wife and two kids. They need me.” And off he jumped.

The businessman, seeing that the boy was holding a parachute, grabbed it away from him, saying, “I am a very important person in this world. I must not die!’ And putting the straps on his shoulders, he quickly jumped out of the plane.

Only the priest and the boy were left on the plane. The priest told the boy, “Son, take the last parachute. I am old and I have no family. I’m ready to leave this world. You are still young and have a great future. Save your life.” The boy, with a naughty smile, said, “Don’t worry, Father. There are still two parachutes left. The ‘very important man in the world’ just jumped out wearing my backpack.”

There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others. To live life selflessly in the service of others is noble. But remember to maintain a balance. What would you do in life if you lived a truly selfless life ?

Selflessness should be the basis of every relationship. If a person truly cares about you, they’ll get more pleasure from the way they make you feel, rather than the way you make them feel. It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others. True leaders are selfless. By their selflessness they become heroes to humanity. They have always been servants of the people first.

A hero is somebody who is selfless. Who is generous in spirit. Who just tries to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really deeply cares. In this context, the priest becomes our hero. Jeffrey R. Holland says that true love blooms when we care more about another person than we care about ourselves.
