Introduction

Every year, as Fr. Kinyua’s Online Congregation under the umbrella of Father CK Foundation, take time to pray for our candidates. This year, 2022, we have had two session for candidates’ prayers. As parents, guardians and other stake holders in education, we have a religious responsibility to pray for our children. But as Christians, why do we pray?

The end of the year (or semester) can be a challenging and stressful time for all ages of students. The pressure mounts, exams approach, the schedules fill up, and the to-do lists are never-ending. It can seem daunting and overwhelming, or even impossible to get through. Any testing season causes anxiety and students begin to place their value on an exam grade. The truth is, though, God is always with us, always fighting for us, and is always faithful to us. In our success and our struggles at school, the Lord never fails us and never gives up on us. He is worthy of our trust and our praise!

1. God’s Word Calls Us to Pray

One key reason to pray is because God has commanded us to pray. If we are to be obedient to His will, then prayer must be part of our life in Him. Where does the Bible call us to prayer? Several passages are relevant:

“Pray for those who persecute you” -Matthew 5:44 (NIV) [1]

“And when you pray …” -Matthew 6:5

“This, then, is how you should pray …” -Matthew 6:9

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” -Romans 12:12

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” -Ephesians 6:18

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” -Philippians 4:6

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” -Colossians 4:2

    “Pray continually” -1 Thessalonians 5:17

“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone …” -1 Timothy 2:1

Prayer is an act of obedience. God calls us to pray and we must respond.

2. Jesus Prayed Regularly

Why did Jesus pray? One reason he prayed was as an example so that we could learn from him. The Gospels are full of references to the prayers of Christ, including these examples:

“After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” -Matthew 14:23

“Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.’” -Matthew 26:36

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” -Mark 1:35

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” -Luke 5:16

“One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.” -Luke 6:12

“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” -Luke 18:1

3. Prayer is How We Communicate with God

Prayer allows us to worship and praise the Lord. It also allows us to offer confession of our sins, which should lead to our genuine repentance. Moreover, prayer grants us the opportunity to present our requests to God. All of these aspects of prayer involve communication with our Creator. He is personal, cares for us, and wants to commune with us through prayer.

” … if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” -2 Chronicles 7:14

Isaiah wrote, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:29-31).

Hebrews 4:15-16 reads, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Prayer is not just about asking for God’s blessings – though we are welcome to do so – but it is about communication with the living God. Without communication, relationships fall apart. So, also, our relationship with God suffers when we do not communicate with Him.

4. Prayer allows us to participate in God’s Works

Does God need our help? No. He is all powerful and in control of everything in His creation. Why do we need to pray? Because prayer is the means God has ordained for some things to happen. Prayer, for instance, helps others to know the love of Jesus. Prayer can clear human obstacles out of the way in order for God to work. It is not that God can’t work without our prayers, but that He has established prayer as part of His plan for accomplishing His will in this world.

5. Prayer Gives us Power Over Evil

Can physical strength help us overcome obstacles and challenges in the spiritual realm? No, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). But in prayer even the physically weak can become strong in the spiritual realm. As such, we can call upon God to grant us power over evil.

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” -1 Timothy 4:8

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” – Matthew 26:41

6. Prayer is Always Available

This point is covered separately in another article. But, in short, another reason to pray is because prayer is always available to us. Nothing can keep us from approaching God in prayer except our own choices (Psalm 139:7; Romans 8:38-39).

7. Prayer Keeps us Humble Before God

Humility is a virtue God desires in us (Proverbs 11:2; 22:4; Micah 6:8; Ephesians 4:2; James 4:10). Prayer reminds us that we are not in control, but God is, thus keeping us from pride.

“Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” -Matthew 18:4

8. Prayer Grants us the Privilege of Experiencing God

Through prayer we obtain an experiential basis for our faith. We do not ignore the intellect or reasons for faith, but prayer makes our experience of God real on an emotional level.

9. Answered Prayer is a Potential Witness

If our prayer is answered, it can serve as a potential witness for those who doubt.

10. Prayer Strengthens the Bonds Between Believers

Prayer not only strengthens our relationship with God, but when we pray with other believers, prayer also strengthens the bonds between fellow Christians.

11. Prayer Can Succeed Where Other Means Have Failed

Have all your options been exhausted? Prayer can succeed where other means have failed. Prayer should not be a last resort, but our first response. But there are times when sincere prayer must be offered in order to accomplish something.

12. Prayer Fulfills Emotional Needs

Do we need God through prayer? Yes! We were made to function best, emotionally, in a prayerful relationship with God.

OPENING PRAYER

Dear Lord! How dearly You love me! You completely gave Yourself up for me because of Your love for me! Thank You, Lord. I love You Father; I love You with all my heart, my soul and my mind; please look down with mercy on me as I come to Your feet praying for success in my exams. Lord, the Bible says that the horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord! As I prepare for the exams, please give me the treasures of wisdom and knowledge which belong to You.

Give me a heart of wisdom and understanding too. Fill me with your spirit of wisdom just as You made young Daniel ten times wiser. Lord, You are a wonderful Counselor and magnificent in Your works! Give me good counsel during my exams and teach me the lessons I have to study and how to prepare well. Give me sharp memory, so that I can retain all that I have studied in my mind. As you were with Joseph and made him successful, be with me also and make me successful.

Jesus, You have promised, ‘Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age; I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ Be with me during the exam period and help bring to my memory all that I have studied; give me the grace to write the correct answers for each of the questions given and complete my exam within the stipulated time. Grant me favor in the eyes of those who correct my answer sheets. Father, during my exams, give my family and I good health, free from any exigencies. Give me a calm mind that trusts in You.

Father, I thank You and praise You for making me victorious in Christ and honoring me by giving me great success in the exams. I pray in the mighty Name of Jesus and God the Father, Amen!

PRAYER

A Prayer for Guidance in the Day & Exam Ahead

Good morning, Lord! Today’s a new day, a chance for a new start. Yesterday is gone and with it any regrets, mistakes, or failures I may have experienced. It’s a good day to be glad and give thanks, and I do, Lord. Thank you for today, a new opportunity to love, give, and be all that you want me to be.

Today I want to start the day with you on my mind and in my heart. As I dress, let me wear the armor you’ve provided daily: the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the belt of truth, the shoes of peace, and the sword of the spirit—with prayer on my tongue: praise for you and petitions for those around me and those I meet.

Feed me today with your daily bread. As the Bread of Life, your food, like manna, will sustain me throughout any trials and hungers. Help me to set my thoughts on things above and to speak only what will help and encourage others. Keep me from putting my foot in my mouth, and help me guard the affections of my heart today, Lord. Make whatever work I do be marked with excellence rather than perfectionism, as I seek not to make a name, but to make a difference. Help me to treat each person I encounter as you would, with respect and love, forgiving others and asking for forgiveness myself when needed.

As I start this day, help me remember that I belong to you, and my desire is to act accordingly. Keep my feet from stumbling and my mind from wandering into distractions that could steal precious time and energy from the most important things you have designed for me. I’m proud to be your child, Lord. And I’m so grateful that you died for me—rising again on your own new morning—so that every day could be filled with the wonder of your love, the freedom of your Spirit, and the joy of knowing you.

I know earthly life is short and fleeting, Lord. But I want to live today as if it were the first or the last day of my life, giving thanks for every good and perfect gift you choose to give. Today, and every day, I want to live my life for you, Jesus. In your precious name, Amen.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. –Galataisn 6:9

PRAYER

A Prayer for Trusting God in Hard Seasons

Lord, I thank You that You are the God of the impossible. You can do anything. I want to trust in Your ability and not my own. Teach me to see difficulties in my life from Your perspective. Help me to focus on You and Your power. I want to be like Joshua and Caleb who believed in a good report and focused on You even in hard circumstances (Numbers 14:7-9). My responsibility is to carefully read, trust, and obey Your Word. Today I bring before You this difficulty in my life [such as these upcoming exams, or this challenging semester, or a difficult class, etc]. Help me not to fear but to trust You in this situation. I declare my faith in Your ability to fulfill Your promises to me. You will fight for me and win the battles in my life. You are mighty, powerful, righteous and true.

In Jesus name, amen.

EXAM DAY 9

PRAYER FOCUS: RETENTION

Genesis 1:1-31

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. …

1 Corinthians 12:1-31

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; …

Matthew 25:36

I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’

2 Kings 2:23-25

He went up from there to Bethel, and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” And he turned around, and when he saw them, he cursed them in the name of the Lord. And two she-bears came out of the woods and tore forty-two of the boys. From there he went on to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

PRAYER

Almighty God, as I am in class and as I study daily, I ask that You would give me the ability to retain key information that will be on my exams. Holy Spirit, please prompt me when there are subjects that will be important to remember, not just for the exam but also for life. Lord, I am diligently taking notes and studying. I need Your help to be able to recall what will be required of me during my exams. Thank You, Lord, for always having my back in the stressful times. I know that I can trust You for the help I need. Luke 8:7 Other seed fell among thorns that grew up with it and choked out the tender plants.

1 Corinthians 10:13  No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.

PRAYER

Father God, there are so many distractions around me as I try to study. I want to do well on my exams, but activity and noises are diverting my attention away from my studies. Gracious Lord, I ask that You would please remove the distractions or grant me the ability to tune them out. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Romans 8:38-39

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.”

PRAYER

Faithful Jesus, You tell me not to worry. I know that when I worry, it means I am not trusting in You. I know that worrying will not help. But I am still worried because of the exams I have to take. Please bless me with the faith to trust in You completely. Calm my fears and be near to me as I take my exams. Amen.

EXAM DAY 14

PRAYER FOCUS: CLARITY

Proverbs 2:6-9 (NLT) – For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go.

Hebrews 4:16 (KJV) – Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Psalm 23:1-6 (KJV) – The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

PRAYER

Mighty Lord, I pray as I prepare for my exams that You will give me clarity of mind. I have multiple exams which I am studying for, and it is a lot of material to cover. I ask You, Lord, to clear my mind of confusion. Please grant me success in my studies and with my exam. Thank You, Lord, for the confidence I have in knowing that You are with me. Amen.

PRAYER FOR NON-TEACHING STAFF IN SCHOOLS.

Lord,

We lift up our school staff today. We pray for their peace and covering this day. We pray for all that You have in store for them. We pray that You would equip them in every way with the wisdom that they need to lead their classes and schools every single day.

God, we pray that Your strength would fill them and enable them to do all that they do with a heart of compassion, grace, and understanding that comes right from You. Give teachers, educators, administrators, bus drivers, custodians, principals, the ability to be effective in their job – to have an impact on these young lives and to create an atmosphere that’s safe, fun, and fosters learning about important things.

We pray that you, God, would give them encouragement. Give them help when they’re weary and lots of grace when they feel like they’ve reached the limit. And please give them peace even now as they prepare for this school year. God, may you guide them in every good work of preparation, impact, and resources for those who are paying out of pocket for school supplies. Everything that concerns them, God, we know that it’s in Your hands today. We lift them up.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen

A PRAYER FOR PRINCIPALS.

Dear God, we come to you today asking your blessing on our school administrators. Thank you that they have answered the call to lead our teachers and schools so that our children might learn in a safe and nurturing environment conducive to academic and personal success.

Bless our school administrators with wisdom, integrity, a sense of humor, patience and the physical and mental energy equal to their tasks. Bless them with strong support from parents, teachers and the community.

Enable and empower our administrators to act as encouragers for our teachers, parents and students. May they be approachable, friendly and professional as they support our teachers. Give them insights into each teacher’s unique gifts, strengths and abilities so that they might engage each teacher in roles that contribute to the common good.

We pray for patience and wisdom for our administrators when complaints arise from parents. Give them the grace to listen. We pray for parents that they will be reasonable and willing to listen . We pray that parents will first communicate with their child’s teacher before escalating their complaint. Make parents aware that the school is working in the best interest of all as they seek practical solutions to improve the situation.

When tragedy strikes in the school community, such as the death of a student or a natural disaster, help our administrators to be instruments of comfort and stability, bringing the faculty and school community together in ways that will allow your caring presence to be known and shown in healing ways.

We pray for our school administrator’s role in keeping our school campuses safe from violence, threats and bullying. May your protecting angels surround them and our schools.

We pray that our school administrators may have wisdom and discernment as they deal with discipline problems. Give them the information necessary about the special needs of individual students so they can decide the best course of action that will keep the classroom safe, orderly and stress free and at the same time help the disorderly student grow in their ability to develop appropriate behavior and coping skills. And when outside resources are needed such as psychological help or special accommodations, we pray that they may be readily available to our administrators.

As we pray, we are aware that being a school administrator can be a lonely and difficult job. Please send them encouragers and relieve them of demanding workloads that prevent them from having quality family and personal time. Show them healthy ways to relieve stress and ways to stay active physically. Help them feel loved and accepted by You in their most difficult professional and personal times.

Reward our school administrators by allowing them see the fruits of their labor displayed in the success of their teachers and students. Give our school administrators joy in seeing their school become a central part of the greater community, a place that has a family feel.

Accept our prayer today as an expression of our gratefulness to you and to them for their dedication in making our schools a central and vital part of our community. Amen
