Finishing the Year Well
21 Days Novena for Favor and Breakthrough
Introduction

In God’s creation, the passage of time is marked by days, months, seasons, and years. We experience each interval, whether it’s twenty-four hours of a day, thirty days of a month, or several months of a season, without interruption. Yet when the year begins to wind down, we often feel surprised and wonder where the days went.
We lead busy lives, and it can be easy to simply let the year come to an end without much thought or feeling. But setting aside a special time for personal prayer with the Lord helps us conclude the year in a meaningful way and prepare ourselves for the New Year. This is what this novena is all about.
Reflecting on the Details of our Year

Taking time to reflect on the year we’ve just passed through is more than worthwhile. As we consider the many ways the Lord cared for us, both materially and spiritually, a sense of thankfulness will arise in our hearts. We’ll realize that in both our difficult circumstances and joyous occasions, the Lord has been constantly caring for us.
A verse in the Old Testament describes God’s faithfulness to us. Lamentations 3:22-23 says:
“It is Jehovah’s loving kindness that we are not consumed, for His compassions do not fail; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Whether we were conscious of it or not, every morning, God’s tender compassions met us afresh. Reflecting on the details of our year helps us see His great faithfulness toward us, in matters big and small.
Allowing the Lord to shine on us

Setting aside time this way also gives the Lord the opportunity to speak to us concerning any unconfessed sins. Sin always disrupts our fellowship with the Lord; this is why we need to confess our sins to Him.
In 1 John 1:9, it says:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” By confessing our sins, we can experience God’s forgiveness and cleansing. As we open ourselves to His shining, the Lord will make us aware of any sins we need to deal with. We don’t want to carry over anything that negatively affects our walk with the Lord into the next year. Dealing with any unresolved sins will allow us to begin the New Year in a positive way.
Being refreshed in the Lord’s love

As we spend time to consider the Lord’s loving kindness to us, His compassions, and His faithfulness, we’ll surely realize how great His love is for us. His love even caused Him to die for us so we can be forgiven and washed from our sins. As we reflect on all the ups and downs of our year, we’ll realize He never stopped loving us. This realization will cause us to love Him even more, and spontaneously we’ll tell Him, “Lord Jesus, I love You.”
Offering a fresh consecration to the Lord

This time of intimate fellowship with the Lord is also when we can offer a new consecration to Him. With a new year before us, we can give every aspect of ourselves and our lives to Him. By consecrating ourselves to the Lord, we can be kept walking in the Lord’s way, grow in His life, and allow God to work in us. Our consecration also brings us into a fresh enjoyment of all that God is.
We can consecrate ourselves to the Lord by praying something simple like this:
“Lord Jesus, Thank You for all You’ve done for me. Thank You for your faithfulness and Your love. Lord, I love You. I offer myself to You again. I give the New Year to You. I want to grow in You each day. Keep me in Your way. Lord, I allow You to work in me this year.”
Learning to number our days

In Psalm 90, Moses spoke of the brevity of human life. In verse 12, he asked God:
“Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
May our fellowship with the Lord about this past year make us realize the preciousness of each day. Each day of the New Year before us is full of fresh opportunities for us to know Him, grow in His life, enjoy Him in His Word, and experience Him as the One who lives in us.
We pray that each of us would have a good conclusion to this year by spending time with the Lord, and that in the New Year we would all start with a fresh consecration to the Lord. This novena offers us this chance. Let us do this 21 Days journey together. God desires to hear from us. He wants to hear our heart and our words.
Characteristics to Help you Finish Well

1. Intimacy with Christ

Our highest calling is to grow in our knowledge of Christ and to make Him known to others. Does our desire to know Christ exceed all other aspirations? If not, whatever is taking His place in the center of our affections must yield to Him if we are to know the joy of bearing spiritual fruit. A key secret of those who finish well is to focus more on loving Jesus than on avoiding sin. The more we love Jesus, the more we will learn to put our confidence in Him alone.
2. Fidelity in the Spiritual Disciplines

Spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fellowship, study, worship, and submission are not ends in themselves, but means to the end of intimacy with Christ and spiritual formation. When left to itself, however, any one of these disciplines tends to decline and decay. An infusion of directed intentionality and effort is necessary to sustain order and growth and to bring repeated times of personal renewal.
3. A Biblical Perspective on the Circumstances of Life

Part of the purpose of our suffering and trials is to drive us to dependence on God alone. God responds by revealing more of Himself to us. This knowledge increases our faith and our capacity to trust His character and His promises through the times we do not understand His purposes and His ways. When we view our circumstances in light of God’s character instead of God’s character in light of our circumstances, we come to see that God is never indifferent to us, and that He uses suffering for our good so we will be more fully united to Christ.
4. A Teachable, Responsive, Humble, and Obedient Spirit

Those who finish well maintain an ongoing learning posture through the seasons of their lives. Humility and responsive obedience are the keys to maintaining a teachable spirit.
Humility is the disposition in which we displace self through the enthronement of Christ in our lives and realize that all of life is about trust in God. Obedience is the application of biblical faith in that which is not seen, and that which is not yet. As we mature in Christ, we learn to trust God’s character and promises in spite of ambiguity or trials.
5. A Clear Sense of Personal Purpose and Calling

God has called each of us to a purposeful journey sustained by faithfulness and growing hope. This calling or vocation transcends our occupations and endures beyond the end of our careers. As we seek the Lord’s guidance in developing a personal vision and clarity of mission, we move beyond the level of tasks and accomplishments to the level of the purpose for which we were created.
6. Healthy Relationships with Resourceful People

Relationships such as spiritual mentoring, servant leadership, and personal and group accountability are valuable resources that encourage, equip, and exhort. People who finish well do not do so without the caring support of other growing members of the body of Christ. These relationships help us to increase in intimacy with Christ, maintain the needed disciplines, clarify our long-term perspective, sustain a teachable attitude, and develop our purpose and calling.
7. Ongoing Ministry Investment In The Lives of Others

Spirit-filled living requires us to discover and develop the spiritual gifts we have received and exercise them through the Spirit’s power for the edification of others. Believers who finish well are marked by ongoing outreach and sacrificial ministry for the good of other people.
Those who squander the resources, gifts, experiences, and hard-learned insights God has given them by no longer investing them in the lives of others soon wither and withdraw.
What does it take to finish well? How can we run in such a way that we can say with Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7; Acts 20:24; 1 Corinthians 9:24-27)? Taking to heart the above seven characteristics will help you finish well day by day, as you “run with endurance the race that is set before [you]” (Hebrews 12:1).
Scriptures for Meditation

Hebrews 12:1 – Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.
Ecclesiastes 7:8 – Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
Zechariah 4:6-9 – Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.
Who art thou, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it. Moreover, the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, the hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you.
Opening Prayer to Finish Strong
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, I pray that you help me finish strong. I am so tempted to quit. It would be easy to drift to the end, but I want to glorify you in all that I do, so please help me finish strong. When I feel weak, please give me your strength. When I want to give up, please put others in my life that will help me.
Jesus, thank you for finishing strong. You never gave up on us, you went to the cross, bearing my sin, taking the place of my punishment because you loved me so much. And you have promised to finish strong by returning one day, for this, I am forever grateful. Help me never forget what you have done for me and help me to finish strong. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Declarations

O Lord, I praise, worship, honour and adore You for bringing me to the last month of the year. I exalt and glorify your holy name for all the battles You fought for me this year. Thank You for being on my side since the year began. Thank You for carrying me through all the fires and rivers of affliction that have come my way this year. Blessed be Your Holy name.
I decree and declare that in this last month of the year, no weapon fashioned against me and my family shall prevail. We shall not end the year weeping, wailing and in sorrow. My life and the lives of members of my family and church shall not be cut short. We shall not be victims of end of the year tragedies and calamities.
I decree and declare that I shall end this year in Christ and with Christ. Powers that dry up people’s spiritual lives, powers that dry up spiritual virtues and the anointing of God shall not see me this month. I shall not end the year spiritually dry and empty. I shall not end the year wearing filthy garments. I shall not end the year defiled, contaminated and polluted. I strip off every garment of sin from my life. I receive grace to please, honour and glorify the Lord in all I do this month. The Lord will anoint me afresh, the Spirit of the Lord shall fill my life and I will end the year doing exploits for God.
My steps shall be ordered by the Lord this end of the year. The Lord shall lead me in paths of righteousness. I shall not take a step that will take me away from God or truncate my destiny. I shall not fall into the net, trap or pit the enemy has prepared for me.
I decree and declare based on the Word of the Lord that the end of a matter is better than its beginning that I am ending this year better than I started it. There shall be improvement, lifting and progress in my life as the year draws to an end.
I decree and declare in the name of Jesus that my harvest season begins today. I will eat the fruit of my labours for this year, God’s blessings and prosperity will fill my life. All that see me this end of the year shall acknowledge that the Lord has blessed me and changed my story.
I decree and declare that now is God’s set time to favour me. The Lord shall be gracious and compassionate to me this month. God’s favour opens doors for me this last month of the year. God’s favour brings humanly impossible testimonies into my life. God’s favour keeps the voice of weeping and the sound of crying far away from me and my family. The favour of God will cause my prayers to be heard and answered this month.
I decree and declare that throughout December, Nigeria shall be a peaceful habitation and an undisturbed place of rest. God’s wall of fire will surround this nation. His lightning will scatter every evil gathering concerning Nigeria. His arrows shall rout out Nigeria’s enemies of peace and progress.
I decree and declare that because I am a sheep of the Good Shepherd, the Lord Jesus, because God’s Spirit is upon me, I will end this year with fresh revelations from God and a clear direction for the next year. Whether I turn to the left or right, I will hear God’s voice telling me this is the way to go as the year comes to an end, this is the direction to take as you prepare to enter a New Year.
I decree and declare that I shall end this year well. I shall end this year singing a new song. I shall end this year with laughter in my mouth. I shall end this year with something to celebrate about and something to testify about. I shall end this year at a level my enemies never expected I could get to and with a blessing that will shock and depopulate the kingdom of darkness.
A Prayer for Favor
Father, I come to you humbly, knowing that you are God and that I am your beloved child. I thank you for all the blessings you have abundantly poured out on me. You are always good and you always do good to me. Even if I never received another blessing, I would have received so much more than I deserve.
And yet, your word tells me that I am to regularly ask for your blessings. Your word commands to lift up prayer for favor. To ask you, my good, gracious Father, to pour out your blessings on me.
So I come to you boldly and with confidence, knowing that you delight to bless me. You have promised that you will never stop doing good to me. You have promised that you won’t withhold any good thing from me.
And so I ask you to pour out your favor on me. Bless me in ways I wouldn’t even think to ask. I need you more than life itself. Would you please give me more of yourself. More of your love. More of your grace. I want to know you more, which is the greatest blessing of all.
I also ask that you would provide for all of my physical needs. You have promised that you would meet all my needs according to your glorious RICHES in Christ. I thank you that you are going to pour out your richest blessings on me. I trust you to bless me in overwhelming ways.
Thank you Lord for your glorious favor on my life. I thank you that you love to bless me and will bless me. I ask all these things in the name of Jesus, my only righteousness. In his name, Amen.
