Today we celebrate the the feast of the Apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel which commemorates the appearance of the Archangel Michael at various times and places throughout history. While there are several accounts of St. Michael’s apparitions, one of the most famous is the apparition on Mount Gargano in Italy.

According to tradition, in the fifth century, a wealthy landowner named Garganus was searching for one of his lost bulls on Mount Gargano. During his search, the bull was said to have disappeared into a cave on the mountain. When Garganus tried to shoot an arrow into the cave, it miraculously rebounded and struck him instead. Feeling that this was a divine sign, Garganus sought the advice of the local bishop.

The bishop prayed for guidance, and Saint Michael appeared to him, explaining that the cave was a sacred place and that it was to be consecrated as a Christian sanctuary. The bishop and Garganus entered the cave and found it to be a holy site, with an altar already in place and the presence of angels. The cave became known as the Sanctuary of Saint Michael and has been a pilgrimage site ever since.

The significance of St. Michael’s apparition lies in his role as a powerful intercessor and protector. Saint Michael is often depicted as a warrior, leading the heavenly hosts against the forces of evil. His appearance at Mount Gargano reaffirmed his status as a defender of the faith and a guardian of the Church.

The Feast of the Apparition of Saint Michael is celebrated as a reminder of the presence and protection of St. Michael in the lives of believers. It is a time to seek his intercession for spiritual strength and protection against the forces of darkness.

Throughout history, St. Michael has been invoked in times of trouble and danger, and his intercession is believed to bring comfort and deliverance to those in need. The Feast of the Apparition of Saint Michael serves as a reminder of his powerful presence and his ongoing role in the spiritual battle between good and evil.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Divine Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”
